Rosemary Oil makes this sunscreen recipe special. It helps your skin glow, and reduces dryness. When you think of those properties in the context of sunscreen, it makes total sense why rosemary oil is such a good choice. We all know that if we are going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, that we should use sunscreen. But store bought sunscreen is full of so many harsh chemicals that the benefit it provides comes with the baggage of the liquid it is delivered in.
That’s why we love this rosemary oil sunscreen recipe. Everything in it is good for you, and then it uses the power of zinc oxide to provide the basis of the UV ray protection. Zinc oxide is what the lifeguards put on their noses, it is usually marketed as a thick paste. We are going to use it in its pure powder form, and then blend it in to a base that has the right consistency, and is loaded with moisturizing oils so that our skin is in a better spot AFTER the sun exposure than it was before it! We find that with the beeswax as the thickener, that this oil is pretty resistant to sweat and light water exposure, which is remarkable when you think about how the store brands are “waterproofing” your skin with their products…
Just two interesting side notes… Coconut oil itself has some natural SPF properties. Not really enough to be used as a sunscreen, but using it as a moisturizer on a daily basis definitely reduces your casual exposure to the sun’s rays. And jojoba oil is very close in structure and composition to the body’s own oils that our skin produces. We chose it for this recipe because it is very well suited to protecting your skin from the drying effects of sun exposure that ultimately lead to the redness and burning associated with sun exposure.

- 3/4 cup fractionated coconut oil
- 1/4 cup raw unrefined coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons shea butter
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons zinc oxide
- 1 tablespoons jojoba oil
- 30 drops rosemary essential oil
- Use either beeswax pellets, or grate your block of beeswax using a cheese grater
- Melt the beeswax pieces in the microwave in a 4 oz mason jar. You will melt more than you need, and use a tablespoon to transfer it into the mixing jar.
- Add the coconut oils to a 16 ounce mason jar
- Measure the melted beeswax, and add it to the coconut oils in the large mason jar
- Add the shea butter and zinc oxide
- Add the rosemary essential oil, counting the drops with the included dropper
- Add the jojoba oil
- Stir everything well
- Transfer into your squeeze bottle using a funnel
- Label the bottle with tags and washi tape, and take it with you wherever you'll get sun
